Formatting your text file for MakeMyScriptures:

If you have a document you would like to be able to navigate using book, chapter, and verse notation (such as a different version of the Bible) you can use MakeMyScriptures to generate the Navigation index and source text file. These rules are for formatting scripture length documents which are already broken into book/chapter/verse format.  For instructions on formatting smaller documents, click here.

Navigation Rules

BOOKS:  Book names can be up to 31 characters long  (If book names are too short the book and chapter name will appear on the same line.  You can fix this by lengthening the name of your book.)

CHAPTERS: Chapters can be named numerically, or with a short title (less than 31 characters).  If named numerically, they must go in sequence.

VERSES: Verses should be numeric; the first verse in a chapter should be 1 or 0, and verses should be in sequential order.  Verses should be on their own lines.  Carriage returns should precede a verse #; and verse #s should be followed by a space.

To see an example file with Book and Chapter tags inserted, click here.  Please note that extra spaces and blank lines will not be included in your finished document.  The example file includes standard characters such as the colon and the dash to create visual space.

Tags

Tags are reserved words/characters that are used within a document text to indicate a chapter or book heading.   One way to organize your text document is with tags.  For example,

Book: Genesis
Chapter: 1
1 In the beginning....

The book tag is Book: *
The chapter tag is Chapter: *

Note that the asterisk is used to indicate where the actual book name or chapter number is.

TIP: If you do not want chapters or verses but only want book headings, such as in the Instructions DOC for MarkMyScriptures, then put each book's text in a chapter 0 -- this will prevent the chapter # and verse # navigation popup during document navigation.

Source File

NOTE: Please choose the directory using the dotted button; typing the directory name in the filename box does not work at this time.

MakeMyScriptures recognizes only one type of user-generated file, text files.  Text files generally have the *.TXT extension and can be created in notepad; Most word processors have the ability to save-as *.TXT.

One way to create a source text file is to copy the text from one application and paste it into notepad; then save it.

1) Open a document in Word

2) In the Edit menu, choose "Select All"

3) In the Edit menu, choose "Copy"

4) Click the Windows Start button, then select  "Run"

5) Type Notepad and press enter

6) In the edit menu, choose "Paste"

7) Make sure the document is formatted correctly for MakeMyScriptures by preparing the book and chapter tags and verse numbers (See Tags, above)

8) In the file menu, choose "Save"

9) Change the "Save-in" folder to a place you can get to easily

10) Enter in a file name to "Save As" (I would recommend NOT entering the final name of the document you want to generate as MakeMyScriptures will generate this file -- In other words, if I have a document I want to show up as "Bible" in my document list on the Palm®, I should not save it as "Bible" at this step; rather, I should save as "BibleSource" or some other name)

Document Title

Enter the document name you want to see in MarkMyScriptures.  The document title is what appears in the Document selection list when you tap the "D" button at the top.  This is also the name of the .TXT file generated from your .TXT file, and the name of the index file.  The document title should not be more than 31 characters long.

Sequence Number

The sequence # determines what order the indexed documents appear in the list.  Choose any number between 0 and 255.

Get Book Name from...

If you used the tags a described above, you want to make sure that TAG is selected here, with Book: * as the tag.  This should be the default.  There are several other ways to organize documents so that book information can be extracted; they are listed on the Book screen.

Chapters

If you used the tags a described above, you want to make sure that TAG is selected here, with Chapter: * as the tag.  This should be the default.  There are several other ways to organize documents so that chapter information can be extracted; they are listed on the Chapters screen.

Verses

Normally you will need to change nothing on the Verses screen.  An option is given to remove lines with only a number, such as is generated from Infobases 97 when you copy/paste from the document to a text file.

Creating the DOC file

MakeMyScriptures 1.0 will create the DOC file automatically after you verify that the book/chapter information is correct.

Installing your new document

MakeMyScriptures will ask which Palm® User you want to install these files for.  Two files will be installed  -- the DOC file and the navigation index.  If I created a file from "RecipesSource.Txt" with document title "Recipes" Both "Recipes.prc" and Recipes Index.prc" would be synced.   These files would be in the same directory as the original source file, "RecipesSource.Txt"
