MMSWeb Basics

Internet Connection:  MMSWeb works by downloading the files from lds.org in HTML and searching for tags or markers; the program then inserts navigation tags and formats the file for PDA use.  The MMSWeb Index files are not stored on your computer, but are downloaded as you select them.  Therefore you must be connected to the internet in order to download files.  Your internet connection speed will determine how quickly files are downloaded.  [Back to Top]

Downloading Files:  Follow the directions below to install any MMSWeb file.

  • Select the file you wish to download and click the "Install" button.
  • Choose your file destination, click OK.
  • Do a hotsync.
  • Click Refresh on the Documents page in MarkMyScriptures to see your new file.  [Back to Top]

Document Filter:  There are seven tabs, or screens, in MMSWeb.  The first tab, Documents, shows a list of all available files (except scriptures) that can be downloaded through MMSWeb.  It is an extremely long list, because magazines are available several years back and each month is a separate download.  The second tab, Document Filter, shows categories of files available.  On this screen, select the general category from which to download then choose the document from the selected list on the subsequent screen.  The lists are shown in chronological order, most current first, where applicable. For example, if you choose "Ensign" from the Document Filter screen, on the next screen you would see a list of all available Ensigns, starting in the current month of the current year.  [Back to Top]

Hotsync/Activesync:  After your file has been downloaded it is automatically placed in the hotsync/activesync directory you have chosen.  For more information on file destination, click here.  Connect your device to the computer and sync the files.  Files must be synced before they can be used in MarkMyScriptures.  [Back to Top]

Refresh:  On the Documents screen in MarkMyScriptures there is a Refresh button. Clicking this button searches MarkMyScriptures directories for new files, and adds them to your document list.  Whenever you sync new MMSWeb files, click the Refresh button in MarkMyScriptures to show the new file.  [Back to Top]

MMSWeb File Formats

MarkMyScriptures uses Document/Book/Chapter/Verse navigation, because it is primarily a scripture reader.  Not all MMSWeb documents will use the Chapter/Verse navigation.  However, most will be subdivided to some extent to make navigation easier.  Below are some examples of MMSWeb file formats.

Scriptures:  The complete scriptures, downloaded through MMSWeb use Document/Book/Chapter/Verse navigation, just as the regular scripture files do.  In addition, the footnotes and references in the Bible Dictionary, Topical Guide and Index are hyperlinked.  Meaning, when you tap them you will be taken to the reference listed.  You can set your footnote hyperlink preference in the Preferences menu.  You can choose to display the footnote, or jump directly to it if is one reference only.  [Back to Top]

Magazines/ManualsMagazines and manuals will be listed by their document name in the Documents list.  For example, October 2004 Ensign, or Primary 1 manual.  When you select these documents their book listings are article or lesson headings.  Once you choose the article or lesson, there is no further indexed navigation.  To read the document, page down or scroll.  You can insert your own bookmarks using the bookmark function for further navigation, or you can use the search (Find) function to look for specific areas of text.  [Back to Top]

Page Index for Priesthood/Relief Society:  MMSWeb cannot detect page numbers as part of the Priesthood/Relief Society download.  However, because teachers so often refer the class to areas of text by page we include a separate page number index for the Priesthood/Relief Society manuals.  A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to download the page number file along with the manual.  If you would like page numbers, which appear as the Chapter index, then click "Yes."  The file will be added to your hotsycn/activesync directory automatically.  [Back to Top]

Improperly formatted files:  If a file is not properly formatted, for instance if it is missing titles or has garbage characters inserted in the text, try deleting the file.  Refresh your MMSWeb index, and re-download the file.  If it is still improperly formatted, please send an email to support@skimware.com[Back to Top]

Clearing the Cache:  MMSWeb stores incomplete downloads in the cache directory.  If a scripture file has not finished downloading, MMSWeb will restart the download from the last downloaded page.  When you clear the cache you will have to re-download the complete file.  If you have a file that did not download correctly, clear the cache and try the download again.  [Back to Top]

New Files

Refreshing the Index: As new files become available, such as monthly magazines or new manuals, they are added to the MMSWeb Index.  To see newly available files, click the "Refresh List" button at the bottom of the MMSWeb screen.  You may also want to click the Refresh List button if your file did not download correctly the first time.  [Back to Top]

New Version of MMSWeb:  Occasionally MMSWeb needs to be updated to accommodate changes made to the lds.org website.  To get the latest version of MMSWeb, click the Upgrade MMSWeb tab.  If you do not see the version number change, you may wish to re-download and install the MMSWeb file from the Downloads page of our website.  [Back to Top]

Re-downloading Lost Files: If you delete a file and later wish to use that file again, simply re-download it from MMSWeb.  This is also true if you have lost files due to a data loss.  When you hotsync, notes and marks are backed up, but not documents.  To see more about restoring marks, click here.  [Back to Top]

Creating a Manual Link:  Not every document at lds.org is available in the MMSWeb index.  Use this tab to format these extra documents from lds.org for MarkMyScriptures.  MMSWeb will attempt to parse the file and insert navigation tags.  If it is successful it will download the file to your install directory.  If it is not successful, you can copy and paste the text of the file into Notepad and use the Make File tab to create the document.  [Back to Top]

Using the Make File tab:  Use this utility to convert plain text files into documents for MarkMyScriptures.  Create business files and more.  For a tutorial on using this feature, click here.   [Back to Top]

Downloading Scripture Files: To download the complete scriptures in Spanish or English, click the Scripture Downloads tab.  Select the device type and file destination then click "Ok".  Click "Cancel" to go back to other file downloads.

  • On the Scripture Downloads page select the language to download in by choosing English (default) or Spanish from the language dialog box.
  • Select the files you wish to download.  It works best to select one file, and completely download it before selecting another file.  The "All of the Above" option often causes errors because of the large volume of files being downloaded.  If you have selected a large file (such as the Old Testament) and you have a slow internet connection you can start a download over night. If the download times out just click the Download button again.  The file will resume downloading from where it left off.
  • Once you have selected all the scripture files and downloaded them, do a hotsync.  There will now be two complete sets of scriptures on your PDA.  After you have adjusted your marks and topics, delete your original scripture files.  [Back to Top]

Adjusting Marks:  When moving from the free scripture set to the complete scriptures, transferring your notes, marks and topics directly will not work because of the extra file space taken up by headings and footnotes.  The notes, etc. will be offset by the extra file space, so MMSWeb includes an "Adjust Marks" tab under the Scripture Downloads screen.  Choose your user name on the first screen then choose "Readjust Marks", "Readjust Topics" or "Readjust all marks and topics" on the following screen. [Back to Top]

File Destinations:  When you click the Install button you will be asked to select a file destination.  If there is only one PDA syncing with your computer, the hotsync/activesync name is automatic. If more than one user is syncing with your computer, the MMSWeb default is the last user who installed a file.  Check the following:

  • Destination:  Choose whether you are installing to a Palm or Pocket PC device
  • User:  Select the hotsync/activesync name the files are to be installed under
  • Destination:  Choose to install to main memory or to a memory card

Once you have selected your file destination click "Ok" to begin your file download.  The file will automatically be placed in the Install directory you have specified.  When you do a hotsync/activesync the files will be installed.  [Back to Top]

Multiple Users: Only one MMSWeb registration is required per computer.  Any PDAs that sync with your computer can download MMSWeb files.  Be sure you have selected the correct device type and user name (file destination) when selecting files.  The selected destination is where files will be installed to.

If another user has already downloaded a file, you can choose to use that file again rather than re-downloading it.  Click "Yes" in the dialog prompt to use already stored files. [Back to Top]

Non lds.org Files:  There are a few files, such as the Constitution of the United States, that do not originate at lds.org.  These files are listed under "Other" in the Document filter.  They are free for download through MMSWeb. [Back to Top]
