Sample Formatting
These are tips for
formatting smaller files. A small sample document with tags inserted is
below.
Non-Scripture Text File
When
formatting a non-scripture text file, keep the following information in mind:
-
For short documents, a
"books only" format is ideal; you can select a topic and you will
be taken to the relevant text.
-
For longer documents,
using books and chapters works best. For the easiest navigation,
create several books, with several chapters each. Descriptive titles
for books and chapter help navigation. Name your chapter "Using
Power Point" instead of "Chapter 1".
-
If you decide to use
verses, remember that only a numeric value will be accessible when you are
navigating. For instance, if you choose to assign verse numbers to
paragraphs, you will have to select, say, "5", without any idea of
what is in paragraph five.
-
Spacing is not
preserved after formatting. This includes paragraph indents, tabs, and
lines between text blocks. To preserve spacing, use "_"
characters, or place hyphens or astericks to preserve independent text
blocks.
-
Bold type, italic
type, underlines, etc. are not preserved after formatting. Plain text
means NO formatting. You may wish to insert special characters such as
astericks to mark words that were previously formatted. For
information on how to create a plain text document, or to see what a plain
text document looks like, see the note on creating a plain text file using
"NotePad" on the "Instructions" page.
Sample File
The following is an
example of a short file with "books only" formatting. To format
this file for practice, select the text, copy and paste it into "NotePad"
and save it. Then follow the MakeMyScriptures directions below.
Book: Underlining
To underline drag the stylus from left to right directly through the
text you wish to underline. Lift the stylus and a line will appear
under the text. Underline a block of text by dragging the stylus
diagonally through the text you wish to underline.
To undo underlining drag the stylus from right to left directly
through a portion of the text you wish to UN-underline. This will
undo the complete underline.
Book: Notes
To insert a note tap the text with your stylus where you want the
note icon to appear. Enter text by writing in the Graffiti® area.
Tap the OK button in the dialog box when you are done.
To view or to edit a note, tap the note icon .
To delete a note and its icon tap the Delete button in the dialog
box.
Book: Pull down Menus
To access the pull down menus tap the chapter/verse indicator
displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen. OR tap the Palm® menu icon located in the grafiti area. Select the Navigate menu to choose document, book, chapter or verse; search for key words and phrases; find marks, bookmarks or scroll. Select the Edit menu to select text for the clipboard.
Book: Button Functions
Button functions: Tap the d, b, c, or v buttons to choose a new
document, book, chapter or verse. Selecting from any navigation
index will automatically open the subsequent index. To exit an
index without making a selection, tap on the text of your document or hit cancel.
Book: Searches
To search your current document using keywords, choose "Find", then choose the search method by clicking one of the options in the dialog box. Enter your search word by writing it in the Grafiti area. Search functions are not case sensitive or limiting. Entering a search word "mote" will return instances of the words "mote",
"Mote", "motes". "smote", etc.
Book: Bookmarks
To insert a bookmark tap on the down arrow menu button and choose "Bookmark." Enter a name for the bookmark. To return to a bookmark, tap "Bookmark" and tap the bookmark you wish to jump to. You can jump to, rename, delete, or move a bookmark by clicking one of those options. A mark will not appear where you have a inserted a bookmark, but selecting from your list will bring you to the page where you inserted the mark.
Open the MakeMyScriptures
utility. Click the browse button (the button with three dots) and select
the file you saved from the text above and click next. Enter the document
name as "How to Do It" and click Next. Enter "1" for
the sequence number and click Next. Select the "Tag" option on
the books screen. Click Next. Unselect the "create text chapter
titles" box. Click next. Select the "Don't include
verses" box. Unselect the "Remove lines where there is
only a number" box. Click next. Click "Create files from
source." The last screen should show a list of the following
books: Underlining, Notes, Pulldown Menus, Button functions, Searches and
Bookmarks. Each book should be followed by the word "Chapters"
and then be blank. Click Next. Choose your user name to
install to. Do a hotsync. You should be able to open "How
to Do It", select a book, and see the text for that book.
