Creating Topical Indexes

Creating Topical Indexes lets you organize your favorite scriptures in an easy to access format.  You can also use this feature to organize scriptures and ideas for talks or lessons.

Follow these steps to create a Topical Index:

  • Tap "Topics" in the functions (upside down arrow) menu.

  • On the "Topics" screen, tap "Index."

  • On the "Index" screen, tap "New" and enter the name of your index in the Graffiti® area, then click "OK."

    • An index is a category, group, or subject under which will be sub-categories, or "topics."  You might have a "Personal Study" index, under which would be the topics  you are studying.  You can create as many indexes as you wish.

  • Select the index you wish to work with from the "Index" screen by tapping on it.

  • On the "Topics" screen, click on "New" and enter the name of your topic.  You may enter a note about your topic on this screen if you wish.  Click "OK" when you are finished.

    • A "topic" is place where you can create a list of related scriptures and thoughts.  You can create as many topics as you wish.

  • Select the topic that you wish to work with from the "Topics" screen by tapping on it.

  • On the "Refs" (references) screen, you have several options for adding information to your topic:

    • Click the "Ref" button at the bottom of the screen to add a hyperlinked scriptural reference.  Tapping this button will take you to your document list.  You can select references from your indexed documents, just as you would navigate your scriptures.  Select the document, book, chapter, and verse you wish to add to your topic.  It will appear on a "New Reference" screen, giving the reference and description-- the first several lines from the verse.  Click "OK" to return to the "Refs" screen.  You will see your reference on a line below your topic title.  If you tap on this reference, you will be taken to it.  Return to the topical index by tapping "Topics" in the functions menu.

    • Click the "Note" button at the bottom of the screen to add non-hyperlinked references.  Tapping this button will take you to a "New Reference" screen, where you can enter your own reference and description.  You can enter a phrase or a scriptural reference on the reference line.  The description area is the place to enter  r your thoughts and ideas in the topical index.  Tap "OK" to return to the "Refs" screen.  You will see your reference on a line under your topic title.  If you tap on a "Note" reference it will bring up a "This entry is not linked to a DOC" message.  Click "Done" to exit the message.

    • Click the "Show Detail" check box when you wish to see the complete version of your topical index.  When this box is not checked, your topic title will appear at the top of the screen, followed by the reference line from each of your references or notes.  When this box is checked, your topic title will appear at the top of the screen followed by the reference and description of each of your references and notes.

    • Click either the up or down arrow buttons at the top of the screen, then select a note or reference to move it up or down the list, respectively.  Click the "Delete" button, then tap the reference or note you wish to delete.  Tap the "Edit" button to edit a reference or note.  Tap the "x" to return to the "Topic" screen.

  • To add a hyperlinked reference to one of your topics while you are reading, tap the screen as if to enter a note.  Click the "Add to Topics" button in the note dialog box, then select the topic you wish to add this reference to.  It will appear in your reference list as a hyperlinked scripture.

  • Adding more than one verse to a topical reference:

    • Only one verse can be hyperlinked when adding a topical reference.  However, if you would like to include more than one verse you can do one of the following (though it will NOT be hyperlinked):

      • After adding your topic and reference, go to the reference screen.  Click the "Show Details" box.  This will show the verse you have just added to your topic.  Click the "Edit" box at the top of the screen, then click on the reference you wish to alter.  You can then enter a note like "also verse 22", or "including verses 23, 24, and 25"  Then if you hyper link to that scripture, you will know that the following verses are also part of that topic.

      • Or, after creating your topical reference of one verse, select that verse and hyperlink back to it.  Click on the "Edit" menu in MarkMyScriptures, tap "Select text for Clipboard", and drag your stylus over the additional text you wish to copy to the reference.  Tap on "Copy", then tap "Ok".  Select "Topics" from the functions menu, and return to the reference you wish to alter.  Tap "Edit" on the reference screen, select your reference, tap the top of the screen where it says "New reference", and select "Paste" from the edit menu.  The additional verses will be pasted to the first.  Click "Ok" and those verses will be added to your reference.

      • Or, hyperlink each individual verse bys selecting "Add to Topics" for each verse.

      • Or, add a "Note" on the reference screen showing the entire reference.  This will appear below your original hyperlinked reference, for your information only-- it will not be hyperlinked.
